WHO ARE THE CHUPACABRAS?

Project Type: Brand Identity

The Mexico City Chupacabras are an original football team created as part of a concept for the NFL to expand their current influence into new territories that did not have a pre existing franchise. An expansion into the territory will not come as a complete surprise as the sport is getting more of a foothold in the regional especially with the introduction of Mexico’s own American Football league in 2011. American Football has also been featured in the city with numerous American teams playing in Mexico City’s, “Estadio Azteca” Stadium.

DESIGNING THE TEAM

When deciding what we should call the team, numerous ideas were thrown around with Caballeros, Dorados, Quetzalcotals, and serpents being considered. The goal was to use a figure that was recognizable to not only residents of Mexico, but also to the Americans that would now be adding the players of this team to their fantasy football draft.

We eventually landed on the Chupacabra being the face of the team. A creature from folklore that is said to inhabit both Mexico and the southern parts of the United States, this seemed like the perfect figure for both sides to recognize. In addition to sticking to it rabid dog like appearance, it has also been given the feathers of the Quetzalcoatl along its head to help make it more unique as opposed to just looking like a dog.
